NHRA Vice President Steve Gibbs wasn't always a VP at the largest drag
racing organization in the world. He also didn't always run the NHRA
Museum in Pomona. Even before he managed Irwindale Raceway, he was a
drag racing fan and he took a lot of pictures. Fortunately for us,
some of them were gassers. Here's a few. Oh...I also included
a few of the "other" kind of cars...you know...not gassers!
You know the drill...click on the picture for a larger version.
Gassers
Airoso Bros. I think it's Bakersfield in 1960.
Junior Thompson at San Gabriel in 1962.
Probably the earliest photo I've seen of the Stone & Woods
car. KS Pittman was the driver, so they weren't Stone, Woods &
Cook yet. This is at Bakersfield in 1960. Also notice the 2
hole Hilborn. About 20 hours before this photo arrived, someone
asked me if they had ever run a 2-holer. I ventured that I didn't
think so. Hmmm...mighta been wrong on that one!
Unknown Willys at San Gabriel. Atts Ono, maybe?
Okay...it's not really a gasser. Looks like it was running as a
Fuel Altered unless I'm misreading the class. Anyone?
Not Gassers
I included this pic for two reasons. First, I remember the car
well...it also did some "street duty" on occasion. The
second reason? Because I seem to be the only person in the world
that likes 62 Dodges and Plymouths. Maybe because the first
seriously quick car I ever drove was a 62 Plymouth 413.
554...nuff said?
Oh I love the old Comp cars. Here's an
unidentified one.
Nice chopped coupe. No, it isn't Chrisman's...that was a
5-window...and it isn't the SoCal/PVTA car because it isn't chopped enough
(!). Anyone know who it might be?
