1967 Chevrolet Step Side Short Bed Gasser Project

This is a 1967 Chevrolet project that started as a street rod and soon turned into a nostalgia gasser. My goal was to build a truck that would be street legal but bullet proof to the extent that it could be raced without fear of breaking.

Body:  The cab and all forward sheet metal were acid dipped to bare metal. All rust was repaired with new sheet metal, either fabricated or purchased. The firewall was filled. The tank was removed and replaced with a fuel cell in the rear of the chassis. The stock instrument panel was replaced with a powder coated insert with new Autometer gauges.

The hood and fenders were welded together to form the tilt front end. The rear portion of the fenders are primered and need to be fitted and matched to the split line. The headlight buckets need to be mounted to the front end framework. At this point all gauges are operational as is the tach. The switches seen control the lights, wiper, fuel pump, ignition, starter and turn signals. There is an ignition switch under the dash so that the system can be deactivated with the removal of a key. All window parts (including glass) are present along with door handles and hardware. The door hinges were rebuilt with new pins and bushings. The rear glass is present as well. It will be necessary to get a new windshield.

New cab items:

Vintage air heater/defroster

Door rubber seals

Window felt channels

Rear window gasket

New dash panel

New glove box insert.

Chassis: Chassis was completely disassembled and sandblasted. Frame was cut off at the firewall and a new front clip attached, Clip is made of 3/16” wall 2” X 4” tubing. This includes a new engine cross member and motor mounts. The truck has rear airbag suspension. The cross member over the rear axle is a piece of 2” X 3” stainless steel rectangular tubing with ends welded shut welded in place as a cross member. This doubles as a reservoir for the airbags. The compressor for the air bags is mounted on the right side of the frame under the cab. The rear of the frame was boxed over the area where the 4-link brackets were mounted in addition to the area where the new front clip attached. Additional bracing to the 4-link brackets were formed and added. A tank support and cover were fabricated to mount the new 22 gallon fuel cell. These items were powder coated. The Mallory fuel pump and filter are mounted just ahead of the tank and a ½” fuel line feeds the engine. The front axle is new with new Ford style spindles, urethane bushings and leaf springs. The front brakes are new Impala single piston disc calipers and rotors. The rear brakes are Corvette 4 piston calipers and Corvette rotors. The emergency brake is a caliper/disc unit mounted on the front of the differential. The master cylinder is a new Master Power Brake unit. Steering box is a rebuilt manual Corvette unit. The steering shaft has 3 new Borgenson universal joints. ALL steering / brake / suspension components are new. New Griffin aluminum radiator. New Optima dry cell battery.

Drive Train: Rebuilt 454 Chevrolet big block with oval port heads, 9.5 CR. New Comp Cams solid lifter cam/lifters. Harland Sharp roller rockers. Team G air gap manifold. New Holly 750CFM with vacuum secondary and electric choke. MSD AL6 ignition box, coil and distributor. New fender well headers coated with high temp coating. Lakewood steel bell housing, new Hayes flywheel, new Center Force clutch and disk.

Rebuilt Muncie M-20 wide ratio 4 speed transmission. (have all old parts) New lengthened / balanced driveshaft and u-joints. 12 bolt posi trac rear end with new clutch / spring kit. Rear housing shortened by Dutchman (Portland OR) Has new 32 spline Dutchman axles with large bearing Ford axle ends.

Truck runs and has been driven. Chassis & drive train are complete.  Cab and bed needs finished.

I have the original bed front, sides and fenders. All have been dipped and primered. All in pretty good shape. It was my intention to fabricate a new bed from heavier gauge steel to add some weight on the back end. I was going to use trailer type read fenders similar to those of early Willy’s pick ups. Designed to be 7” narrower that stock, it would allow the tires to extend outboard from the fender edges like early gassers.

At this point, truck could be finished as a street legal truck, a full time gasser or combination.

Feel free to call or e-mail with questions. I can e-mail pictures of specific areas if needed. $22,500.00. Would consider partial trade. (No projects)

Price reduced to $19,500 or Best Offer

I have reached an age where I do not have the time or inclination to finish the project.
