~ Byron's Gasser Madness! ~

~ 1963 Nationals ~

~ Photos by Jack Dunn ~

It's not that often that one finds a collection of good color photos from this era.  For this collection I need to thank a few folks.  First, Jack Dunn for taking the photos in the first place and being kind enough to allow me to share them with you, the visitors to Gasser Madness.   Second, I need to thank Gene and Marge Altizer for showing me the photos in the first place...now, on to the show!
Another big thanks to Bill "Badco" Ott for ID's on the dragster photos at the end of the page.

Gene Altizer's A/G Anglia

Sitting on its high-buck transporter (really, most were ground-towed back then) borrowed from Chuck Stolze for the Nationals.

Gene Altizer ready to head for the Nationals.

For the long tow to Indy, Gene had borrowed the tires from his Dad's service truck (seen in the background of the previous photo) since they were better than the ones on his Suburban

This is how most guys went to the races...towing on the ground.

C/MSP Corvette

At first glance I thought this had a Man-A-Fre induction, but I don't think so. Looks like 6-2's. Cool, huh?

AA/C

A couple of AA/Comps duking it out. Could that be the "Tennessee Bol Weevil" in the far lane?

Dave Hales D/G Willys

Dave Hales' El Camino tow car, borrowed from Chuck Stolze for the Nats.

Dave Hales crewman, Merle "Sonny" Caulkins.

One of my favorite dragsters, Tony Nancy's silver car

Designed by Steve Swaja, this car was, to me anyway, one of the most beautiful dragsters ever built! Here's Tony Nancy vs Bobby Vodnick in the Hirata-Hobbs digger.
